5 Ways To Create a More Natural Medicine Cabinet!

alternative medicine, aromatherapy, aroma

There are so many alternative ways to keep the body working optimally without turning straight to the over the counter drugs, prescriptions, antibiotics, and the like. Just because they are in the store, or are prescribed, does not make them good for your body. So, let’s take a look at what most people view as must haves in their medicine cabinets…

1.) Pain Relievers (for pain or to reduce fever). The most common forms of pain relievers are Ibuprofen and/or Tylenol/Acetaminophen. With any drug, there comes a risk in taking it, and OTC medicine like Ibuprofen or Tylenol are drugs. As a mother, I really want a pain reliever that has no side effects. Is there such a thing? I like to approach this area in 3 different ways if need be…

A.) My go to is homeopathy. What is homeopathy? Find more information here. Joette Calebrese has practiced as a homeopathic consultant since 1997. She offers easy to read blogs on everyday conditions. She is amazing and so knowledgeable on the subject of homeopathy.

Dealing with headaches? Check out Joette’s post here on headaches. This is what I reach for when I have a headache; it’s Arnica Montana 30c OR 200c when I have a terrible headache. I’ll take 1 dose and if it isn’t better within 15 minutes, I’ll take another. If it still isn’t better in 15 minutes, I’ll take another dose. In her blog above, she suggests Kali bichromicum 30 for barometric change or pressure headaches. Keep in mind, that there are a ton of different kind of headaches and matching the remedy is important when finding the one that will help you.

Homeopathy is safe and is cheap! Did I just find gold? Perhaps! There are many ways to approach homeopathy. I believe the Banerji approach is simple and effective. Follow Joette Calebrese blog posts to find our more! What if my little one has a fever? Well, I believe it is important for the immune system to do it’s job, hence the fever. It means it’s trying to kill the foreign attackers with making the environment inhospitable by heating up the body. If a fever is reduced, sure, the subject feels better, however, the sickness will linger. Fever is a good thing and is our immune system’s natural defense system. Here is a guide from Joette Calebrese’s blog (please read) about 3 different remedies to have on hand for fevers; Aconitum 30, Belladonna 30, and Chamomilla 30. Each remedy is used for different approaches for fevers. ***Note: Do not touch the remedies with your fingers. Put remedies in cap and put right into the mouth. If dissolving in water, wait until the remedy is completely dissolved, this maybe takes 20 minutes to a half hour, and syringe into mouth or drink. ***

B.) Herbs. I feel like herbs are diamonds in the ruff. Most don’t really use them because they are uneducated in them. Here is a wonderful post about herbs! I love to use elderberry syrup for immune boosting properties especially when my littles are sick. I make my own elderberry syrup as we have been blessed with elderberry bushes in our back yard. Here is the recipe for Elderberry Syrup I use for my family! Herb tinctures are another avenue to take for pain. Pain potion from Earthley is a great option. However, only ages 6 and up are able to ingest, but it is a great alternative to headache pain and/or body aches.

C.) Essential Oils. I believe in Essential oils, however, I also believe they are to be used with extreme caution. I believe consulting with a certified clinical aromatherapist is the safest way to go. Not all MLM representatives will have accurate information and yes, they may have many hours of study under their belt, but where is their information coming from? I have been guilty in trusting way too much in this area from folks that I trusted over the years, and like everything, we all need to do our own research to be sure it’s legit. After I learned some of the dangers of how essential oils can hurt the body instead of help it, I was completely open to learning more. Lea Jacobson is a certified clinical aromatherapist and you can access some of the information for free by giving your email. Here is the link to her website. Her credentials are quite extensive. When you get there, click on ‘Library’, click ‘access now’, and sign up to access very valuable information. For example, if we look at the essential oil called basil, Lea will give insight to if you can inhale basil, if basil needs to be diluted if used topically, and what you need to avoid when using basil. Essential oils can be taxing on our liver and other vital organs when we don’t use them properly. When used properly, I believe essential oils can be very useful in helping with pain, fevers, and many other problems our bodies may encounter. Lea recommends that essential oils and herbs should not be used in conjunction. The same goes for homeopathy. The frequencies are strong in essential oils and can create the frequencies in homeopathy to not be as potent so it is important to keep essential oils and homeopathy away from one another.

2.) Topical Salve (for wound care). I love love to use Earthley’s All Purpose Salve for wounds that my kids may get from scratches to diaper rashes, this easy to use tube makes it easy to rub on wounds! It’s all natural, has calendula flowers, which has anti-inflammatory properties, chamomile, which is naturally soothing and helps ease pain, and lavender, which naturally promotes healing! Earthley’s black drawing salve is great for bites, stings, poison ivy and more. It has bentonite clay and activated charcoal to help soothe these ailments.

3.) Cough/Colds. Don’t grab the NyQuil! Too many side effects. Need to feel better fast! Then, grab Feel Better Fast from Earthley! It is an herbal tincture that is safe for ages 6 months and up! No unruly side effects like drowsiness or nausea, just straight up natural ingredients to help your body recover from illness. Another herbal extract option from Earthley is called Cough-b-Gone, however, this one can only be safely used for ages 2 and up. I also turn to homeopathy if my medicine cabinet doesn’t hold my herbal extracts at the moment, and so oscillococcinum is the winner to any cough/cold/flu symptom I may encounter! If that doesn’t work, Bryonia 200c mixed with Aconitum 200c every 6 hrs or more frequent if the illness is more severe. Here is a post in more detail.

4.) Stomach Pain. If I just had a plateful of some really greasy food and my stomach just cannot handle it, I don’t go and grab a TUMS, but I ALWAYS go to homeopathy, Nux Vomica 30c or 200c for help. It reliefs my indigestion fast. My other go to for this problem is digestive bitters from Earthley. If stomach pain is due to a cold/flu, than oscilloccinum comes to mind.

5.) Sore Throat. My oldest daughter tends to get sore throats, well, more so, than my other kiddos, and when she does, I turn to 3 ingredients in my cabinet. This always clears it up for her in a day or two. Manukaguard Throat and Chest liquid (safe for ages 2 and up), Manuka honey and lemon juice, and homeopathy. For homeopathy, I use Hepar Sulph 200c twice per day until better. Joette Calebrese goes into more detail here in her sore throat blog.

***Overall, when my family feels an illness coming on, we usually start on a vitamin C regiment. Liposomal Vitamin C is my first choice for better and quicker absorption, however sometimes it is difficult to get my kids to drink it because of the sour taste. In that case, I’ll give them Sufficient-C. My kids love it as it tastes great! Lots of vitamin C in it plus it has Bromelain, which is effective in aiding in coughing spells.

Blessings, Love Gina
