It’s TICK SEASON! What Do I Do If I Get a Tick On Me!

tick, insect, leaf

Ticks of any kind I do not like. I have had deer ticks on me before, and they totally creep me out because they are so small! Ticks, for me, rank right up there with spiders. They make my skin crawl!!

What do we know about ticks? Well, we know that ticks can be carriers of Lyme’s Disease. Certain states are found to have higher risks to Lyme’s Disease based on the tick population.

Here is the list…

  • New Jersey.
  • New York.
  • Pennsylvania.
  • Rhode Island.
  • Vermont.
  • Virginia.
  • West Virginia.
  • Wisconsin

Here are some prevention tips I have found useful for my family. This salve is great for keeping the ticks off my littles. It’s called Pest Aside from Earthley. I like to put some around my kid’s ankles, their neck area and any other exposed area of skin that ticks may like to migrate to. Ticks love to hide behind ears, in the crevices of necks, belly buttons, arm pits, in hair, and shoulder blades. I have seen though they always like to crawl up. So, if we put a deterrent near the feet, that will help. If your family is planning a camping trip to the woods, this will most certainly help with keeping ticks off!

We live in the country and our property has some woods to it. Well, that screams ticks! We have gained some new friends because of that, chickens! They will eat ticks! Guinea hens also do a great job eating ticks. If you have possum friends in the area, think twice about hurting them. Studies show that one possum will eat 5,000 ticks in one season! WOW!

Always search for ticks on your body when you have been outside, especially in the woods or if you’ve been in a long grassy area. This is a habit for me and my family since we live on a property with woods. If you have a dog that goes outside, but also goes inside the home, check the dog for ticks as well. I use a collar for tick prevention for our Great Pyrenese, Luna. This I feel deters a lot of ticks, but doesn’t keep all of them off of her. I usually find 2 to 5 on her during the crazy season of ticks, which isn’t too bad. Here is the collar I use for dogs.

WHAT TO DO IF I FIND A TICK ATTACHED!

So, let’s talk about what not to do. Some people think that putting essential oils right on the tick will make the tick back out and all is well. Unfortunately, while this does get the tick to move out of the skin, it doesn’t prevent transmission of Lyme’s if the tick is a carrier. The reason for this is the tick can vomit back into the skin eruption because of the strong essential oil. This is something I wouldn’t do.

Please don’t grab a tweezers and try to pull it out. If the head gets stuck in there, you’ll have a terrible time trying to get that out and will risk infection of Lyme’s as well. Please don’t use fire as that falls under the same category with essential oils, it may cause the tick to transmit the disease through it’s vomit.

SO, WHAT DO I DO!

This is by far the best tool I have ever used to get ticks out of anything! It’s called the Tick Twister! Something everyone should have in their car, purse, and at home. All you do is put the tool under the tick as close to the skin as possible, and make sure the open part fits tight to the ticks head. Then, all you need to do is turn the tool in circles until the tick comes out. Voila! So easy! I have never ever had a problem using this tool and it works every, single, time!!!

What if the tick has been biting for a long period of time? Once the tick is removed, put it in a glass jar with brandy or vodka in it and label the jar with the date, subject’s name, and where on the body the tick was. Please don’t squish the tick. Amazingly, the tick can be made into a homeopathic remedy if needed. Learn more HERE.

IMPORTANT!

My family follows a protocol if any of us get bitten by a tick. It’s simple and effective! We use homeopathy Ledum Palustre 200C given every 3 hours for the first day, followed by twice daily for a week. This is then used twice weekly for a month and then once per week for another month. This information comes from Joette Calebrese’s blog, a well known homeopath. Here is her post about tick bites. In case transmission of Lyme’s Disease did occur, this protocol will wipe it out. No need for antibiotics. Interestingly enough, Joette speaks about chronic Lyme’s Disease as well and does have a protcol to follow. If that is you, give it a try! Here is the post.

In short, I always have on hand Ledum Palustre 200C for tick bites or really any insect bites, Pest Aside, my Tick Twister Tool, and my eyes and hands to search when needed!

Blessings to you all!

Love, Gina
