Hello world! My children, especially Gracie have always had a hard time sleeping through the night. I can remember when Gracie was 4 years old, she would still wake up multiple times a night, and either me or Josh would need to lay by her until she fell asleep. We of course asked the doctors for advice, and they gave us melatonin as the answer. We tried that, but it seemed to make her more awake and alert so I knew we had to stop and try something else. We have checked her vitamin d levels and each time we have, her levels have been super low. After much research I found that combining Vitamin D with K2 was the best option. I use the Thorne brand Vitmain D/K2 combo, which works for our family. I have also learned through my research that magnesium lotion and vitamin d/k2 work hand in hand for better absorption in the body. Here.
Most people today lack this vital mineral called magnesium. Why? Through soil depletion our food is declining in magnesium. Here is a great source to learn more about soil depletion. Ok, so how can we get our magnesium levels up? Well, I know I just said our foods are declining in magnesium, but we should always go to there first, and then supplement if need be. Here are a few food items that contain magnesium; bananas, dark chocolate, figs, pumpkin seeds, spinach, chard, avocado, yogurt, and almond black seeds.
However, when our bodies need more, there a few options you can try. If you live near a beach, the oceans provide us this vital mineral, however, if you do not have access, then you can try other options. How do you know if your body needs more magnesium? Do you experience any of these listed here…?
- Headaches or migraines
- Insomnia
- High blood pressure
- Blood sugar issues (sugar depletes magnesium) https://wellnessmama.com/5804/magnesium-oil/
- Stress
- Muscle cramps
I love the Wellness Mama and have followed her for a long time and she is very knowledgeable about so many different health related issues. Above I linked her blog on magnesium and if you’d like to dig in more, that is a good place to start. Here is also an article talking about the benefits of transdermal absorbency of magnesium: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5389641/. I know that in my own personal experience, using magnesium lotion helped my daughter go from waking up multiple times a night to after a week putting magnesium lotion on her feet and calves, to sleeping through the night? WOW! Right?! I mean, it was night and day for Miss Gracie and since then, I use it every night on all three of my kiddos. I put a pea size amount on each of their calves or on their feet. My husband gets muscle cramps quite often in his legs and I try to remind him each night to put on the magnesium lotion, but when he hasn’t kept up with it, his cramps will sneak up on him. Let me tell you, they can be so painful and when his leg cramps wake us both up, I immediately grab the magnesium lotion, and rub it the cramp and voila, it goes away every time! I cannot guarantee magnesium lotion will be the all time solution for you or your kiddos, however, what I do know, is most everyone is lacking this vital mineral, so I feel it is important to our overall health. Here is the Magnesium Lotion recipe I use that I found here from Modern Alternative Mama, love her!
- 1 T Mango Butter or Shea butter
- 2 T coconut oil
- 2 T avocado oil (I use olive oil when that’s all I have!)
- Mix 1 T warm water with 2 T Magnesium Chloride Flakes
- 1 T Beeswax
- 10-20 drops of lavender essential oil
- 1 tsp Vitamin E (optional)
1.) Mix Mango butter, coconut oil, and beeswax and vitamin e on low in a double boiler. I just use a heat safe glass bowl and put it in my cast iron pan with water in it. Pour these ingredients into the glass bowl.
2.) Heat on low till melted.
3.) Meantime, warm up the magnesium chloride flakes and water, just till the flakes dissolve. Stir while warming up.
4.) Once #1 is all melted, mix in the chloride mixture, avocado oil or olive oil and add in your essential oil. I like lavender as it is calming for night time. I use a blender dedicated for mixing my lotions. Mix until well blended and as it cools you will see that is no longer a transparent color but now an opaque one. This lotion makes about 4 oz. Usually, I like to double it and put it into my plastic 8 oz jar. **Use only plastic or glass jars.
If you’re not wanting to make this lotion, here is one you can buy! Goodnight Lotion at Earthley.com. Another way to get magnesium into your daily routine is magnesium spray! I do think this is a great way to get your magnesium quickly, however, what I don’t like about it is when you spray it on your skin, it usually tingles, however, that sensation lessons the more you use it in my personal experience. Here is where you can buy magnesium spray! I also put Epsom salts in my kids baths, which is another way to help them de stress from the day and to help them sleep better that night! Win win!
Hey, with being a mom of three, a wife, and living on a mini farm, I need convenience! I could really say so much more on magnesium, however, I really wanted my readers to have the basics and to see how it changed my kids sleep habits for the better!
Blessings, Love Gina
